Graduates of W.E.S.T.'s FA L1CIC certification course in first aid, child protection, and best practice in techniques for coaching young people aged 8-13. Fourteen young coaches aged 16+ from the local English, African, West Indian, and Islamic Middle Eastern ethnic communities, have now become fully fledged members of the W.E.S.T. coaching staff, with the support of the Football Association, the Paddington Development Trust, HSBC Bank, Nike, and Westminster’s Community Safety Team. The W.E.S.T. Initiative (West End Sports Teams) is a community based youth inclusion initiative using sport as a means of attracting youth off the streets, away from crime and drugs, helping to achieve Westminster's Crime & Disorder Reduction targets. W.E.S.T. was founded by the Metropolitan Police, the Churches of Little Venice, and the Paddington Sector Working Group of the Police & Community Consultative Partnership, an innovative prototype of public/private collaboration representing diverse multi-ethnic community stakeholders in the quest for a safe and civil inner-city. Education & Personal Development Page

WEST was founded to provide a better future for youth, via sport. In our multi-ethnic, inner city neighbourhoods, young people are challenged by many difficult issues. WEST provides solutions to help young people overcome these challenges, and to bond together as friends, using an interest in sport as a common attraction.

As young people mature through the programme into adulthood, WEST provides career opportunities as a means of improving their individual lives, and the well being of the wider communities in which they live.

WEST’s current Education & Personal Development activities are comprised of educational activities and vocational training in the following areas:
Football Coaching & Sports Development
Healthy Lifestyles & Drug Awareness
Organisational Development & Community Partnering

There are currently 19 young people obtaining Vocational training and work experience on an on-going basis within WEST, and the number is growing rapidly.

WEST’s first youth apprentice, Frank Harrington, was awarded the Whitbread Youth Sports Volunteer of the Year Award from a national field in 2001.
